Hi, hope everyone had a lovely Christmas holiday!

I was trying to do this post before Christmas but all my plans are behind schedule!! But will do 3 posts before the end of this year!

So here's one of them, about Karl Ferris, who is well-known as a innovator of "Psychedelic Photography". His exhibition "The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience" is going on at Proud Gallery in Camden now.

Karl Ferris was born in 1948 in Hasting, England. Since he was a small child he was interested in the medieval history and art. Later he went to Hasting Collage of Art where he studied Pre-Raphaelite painting style, which would influence his photography in the late 60s.

After graduating school he worked as an aerial photographer in Royal Air Force for 2 years and after that he moved to Canada to become an assistant of Harry Nygard who taught Ferris more professional and creative skills of photography. Ferris came back to England in 1964 and he started getting involved in fashion, art and music scene as a photographer and also a visual jockey, projecting psychedelic images of coloured liquid and photos on dancers' bodies at club events and gigs.

Ferris was introduced to Jimi Hendrix in 1967. He said to Ferris " You are doing with photography what I'm doing with music - going far out beyond the limits and blow minds".  Then Hendrix asked him to become his photographer and re-shoot the cover of "Are You Experienced?".  Then Ferris started experimenting with Nikon fisheye camera to create more innovative and psychedelic images. He went on to shoot album covers of Donovan and The Hollis and the photos became their recognised public images.

I went to the private viewing of his exhibition early this month. I really enjoyed it since I've seen his photos as album covers but didn't know well about his other works such as the collaboration with The Fool - psychedelic fashion designers, and his photos for Marie Clare and Vogue. Here's some photos from the launch party.

There was the psychedelic dance and music experience as Karl Ferris did on the late 60s. Two dancers expressed psychedelic feels and movement by dancing with coloured liquid images and photos which Ferris created.

A band played as well, but unfortunately I don't know their band name....please let me know if you recognise them!!

ブログをクリスマス前に更新する予定だったんですが、スケジュールがだいぶ押してます！でも年越し前に３つポストできるように頑張ります！

ということでまずその一つ、「サイケデリックフォトグラフィー」の先駆者として知られるKarl Ferris (カール・フェリス)について。彼の写真展"The Karl Ferris Psychedelic Experience"がロンドンのカムデンにあるProud Galleryで現在公開されています。

カール・フェリスは1948年イギリスのヘイスティングで生まれる。幼い頃からの中世の歴史とアートに対する興味から、フェリスはのちにヘイスティング・カレッジ・オブ・アートでラファエル前派を学ぶ。それが彼の60年代後半の写真に影響を与えることとなる。

カレッジ卒業後、イギリス空軍で２年間上空フォトグラファーを務める。その後カナダへ移住、フォトグラファーHarry Nygard (ハリー・ナイガード)のアシスタントとなり、より専門的で創造的な撮影法を学ぶ。1964年にイギリスに帰国、そこでファッション、アート、音楽シーンでのフォトグラファーとして活躍すると同時に、色のついた動く液体のサイケデリックなイメージを作り、それをイベントでダンサーやミュージシャンの身体にプロジェクターで投影するビジュアルジョッキーとしても活動するようになる。

1967年フェリスはジミ・ヘンドリックスと知り合う。彼はフェリスに「俺が音楽でやっている事を君は写真でやっている。限界を大幅に超えてまわりに衝撃を与えることを。」と言い、のちに自分のイギリスでのフォトグラファーになり、「アーユーエクスペリエンスト？」のカバージャケット写真の撮影を依頼する。その後フェリスはNikonのフィッシュアイレンズでより革新的でサイケデリックなイメージを作る実験を開始し、DonnovanとThe Hollisのアルバムジャケットを撮影、それらがバンドの最も有名な写真となる。

今月の始めにKarl Ferris Psychedelic Experienceのプライベートビューイングに行ってきました。アルバムのジャケット以外で彼の作品をあまり見たことがなくて、ファッションデザイナーグループThe Foolとのコラボ写真やMarie Clair、Vogueのために撮った写真も見れてかなり嬉しかったです。以下はそのパーティーでの写真。

フェリスが60年代後半にやった音楽とダンス、映像のサイケデリックエクスペリエンスを再現するショーもありました。フェリスが作り出した動く色のついた水のイメージにサイケな写真をプロジェクターで写し、その前でダンサーがそのサイケな感覚を動きで表していて、結構かっこよかったです。

そのあとバンドも登場。残念ながらこのバンドの名前知りません．．．もし誰か分かる人がいたら教えてください．．．

In My Life: The Unseen Beatles

It's getting really cold in London! And I can't believe it's almost the end of year!! Time flies so quick....

Anyway, I'd like to introduce you this great exhibition "In My Life: The Unseen Beatles by Henry Grossman" at Mach Schau' Gallery.

ロンドンはめっちゃ寒くなってきました．．．そしてもう１年も終盤！時間が経つのはホントに早い．．．

ところで今回はロンドンのMach Schau' Galleryで催されている"In My Life:The Unseen Beatles by Henry Grossman"についてご紹介。

Henry Grossman is a New York born photographer who has been taking portraits of famous artists/ activists/ politicians etc. He shot the Beatles extensively between 1964 and 1968.  He had a really good relationship with them and you can tell it from his photos.


I don't want to spoil this if you are interested in the exhibition and are planning to visit, so I'll just show you a sneak peak from a private viewing on last Tuesday.....(sorry they are not great photos!!)



Henry Grossmanはニューヨーク生まれのフォトグラファー、有名なアーティスト、活動家、政治家などの肖像を撮影してきた事で有名。彼は1964年から68年にかけてThe Beatlesの写真を多数撮影。その間のバンドと彼の良い関係が写真にも反映されています。

もしこの展示会に興味あり、行く予定！という人の楽しみを奪いたくないのであまり多くはここに書きませんが、先週の火曜日のプライベートビューイングで撮った写真をちょっとだけ公開。（あまりいい写真じゃないのでご了承を．．．）

The exhibition is on till 10th of December. The gallery Mach Schau' Gallery is located at Beak Street,  just off Carnaby Street.   It's a really nice hidden gallery, hope you have a chance to visit there!

Hellooo. Sorry for being quiet for a while again.

October and November are the craziest months every year. I attend at least 3 gigs every week during this 2 months. I do wonder how I'm surviving.....

Anyway here you go, this is a new post about one of my recent favourite psychedelic bands, The Magnetic Mind!!

The Magnetic Mind are London-based psychedelic band formed in early 2011.  They released their debut single "Maybe The Star, Maybe The Sun" on 14th May 2012, it was produced by Liam Watson who has worked with bands such as White Stripes and Tame Impala. They have recorded second single and it is due for release before the end of this year.

If you like 60s psychedelic/ garage bands like Shocking Blue, Jefferson Airplane, The Music Machine, The Seeds etc, then you're gonna love The Magnetic Mind!!




I first listened to them early this year. I really liked them but for some reasons I couldn't go to see them live for a while and finally went to their gig this July.  It was a really great show, the singer has a beautiful but strong voice and all melodies created by their instruments reminded me the 60s fantastic psych/garage music.



This is their live in last May.

Now they have new keyboard player and drummer (sorry they are not in this photo) so they will be back giging soon!! I'm so looking forward to seeing them again!!

お久しぶりです。しばらく更新できずにいてすいません．．．

毎年10月11月はもうクレイジーな期間なんです。この2ヶ月の間はほぼ毎週、最低3つのライブに足を運んでいるもので．．．全く自分でもどうやってやりくりしてるのか分からないくらいです．．．

何はともあれ、今回は最近のお気に入りのサイケデリックバンドのひとつ、The Magnetic Mindを紹介！

The Magnetic Mindはロンドン出身のサイケデリックバンド。2011年初頭に結成。今年の5月にデビューシングル"Maybe The Star, Maybe The Sun"をリリース、White StripesやTame Impalaのアルバムを手がけたLiam Watsonによってプロデュースされた。セカンドシングルのレコーディングも終わり、シングルは年末前にはリリースされる予定である。

Shocking Blue, Jefferson Airplane, The Music Machine, The Seeds等の60sサイケ／ガレージバンドが好きな人は、きっとThe Magnetic Mindも気に入るでしょう！

わたしがこのバンドを知ったのは今年の始め。すごく気に入っていたけど、いろいろと諸事情でライブには行けず、見に行けたのは7月。でもそのギグがすごくよかった！ボーカルの声は綺麗だけどすごく力強くて、リズム隊のメロディーもばっちり60sのすばらしサイケ／ガレージのサウンドでした。

写真には写ってないんですが、新しいキーボードプレイヤーとドラマーを迎えて、もうすぐまたギグをやるそうです！また絶対見に行きますよ私は。

Hi.

I listen to various kinds of music.  But among the kinds I'm totally in love with the 60s psychedelic / garage music. I even want to marry to the music if it does exist as a human.

Anyway, lately there are so many emerging bands/musicians influenced by the 60s psychedelic music. But to be honest, I can't love them all because of the 60s sounds. I'm very happy to see the new bands deeply influenced by the 60s culture and music because they are also inspiring young people to get into the culture and music. But some new bands are really good and others are...ok. Maybe I'm a bit picky, but I hope it means I know the exact sound I want to listen to.

But anyway I found some good new musicians and here is one of my recommendations to listen to....

Jacco Gardner

Jacco Gardner is a neo-psych/ baroque pop artist from the Netherlands. He also plays in the 60s freak-beat duo The Skywalker.  In 2012 February he released his first single 'Clear The Air' on limited 7", which was sold out immediately. The single will be available again in this September released by Action Weekend Records, and his second single 'Where Will You Go' is due to be released on 7th August from Chicago based label Trouble In Mind Records.





He's been featured in so many music magazines so far and some musicians posted his music videos on their facebook pages so he's name and music are spreading all over the world now. 私は比較的いろんなジャンルの音楽を聞きます。でも、なかでもサイケデリック／ガレージロックが大好き。もしこの音楽が人間として存在しているならもう結婚したいくらい。そのくらい愛して病まないのです。

それはおいといて、６０年代のサイケデリックロックに影響を受けた新しいバンドが最近どんどん増えてきているんです。がしかし、６０sのサウンドだからといって、全部のバンドを好きになれるかと言ったらそうでもないのが私の本音。昔の音楽や文化に大きく影響された新しいバンドを知るのはすごく嬉しい。こういったバンドによって、今の若い人たちが過去の文化に興味を持つきっかけになってくれるから。でも、ピンと来るバンドとそうでもないバンドがいるのは事実．．．ちょっとわたしは好き嫌いが激しいというのもあるかもしれない。でも、自分がどんな音楽を求めているのかちゃんと分かっている、とそう信じたい．．．．

まぁとにかく、英語の記事にビデオを貼ったミュージシャン、Jacco Gardner (ヤッコ・ガードナー) はおすすめの一人。念のためこちらにもビデオを貼っておきます。

These Monsters

I know this is sort of neglect as a music blogger, but I don't want to explain about them much because there is too many words on their Biography and it's hard to understand all for me....

But anyway when I first listened to their 'Live Some', I immediately thought "they must be from Leeds!! This is the hard sound of Leeds...." So, I just wanna you to listen to this and imagine how Leeds is like.  Of course the music scene in Leeds has variety of sounds, but this is one of representatives.

音楽ブロガーとしてこれは仕事放棄と言われても仕方ないんですが、彼らについて説明するのはちょっとめんどくさい笑　だって彼らのバイオグラフィー、文字が多すぎるんだもの。そして私にはちょっと理解するのが難しい．．．

とにかく、彼らの曲'Live Some' を初めて聞いたときすぐさま『彼らはリーズ出身に違いない！！これはリーズの荒いサウンドだ．．．』と感じました。なのでまずこの曲を聴いてリーズがどんな所か想像していただきたい。もちろんリーズの音楽シーンにはいろいろなサウンド、バンドが存在する。でも彼らの音楽はそのシーンを象徴するサウンドのひとつ！

All information of the band is on their website (so organised!!), but for those who can't be bothered to read all, I mean, if you are artists or really into DIY and creative thing then you'd love to read all but for people who love music just with feelings, it's hard to understand...this is my opinion after all, anyway I try to summarise about them for you. 

These Monsters are consisted from Tommy Davidson (Dr.), Ian Thirkill (Ba.) and Samuel Pryor (Vo. & Gt.). They actively work for a new independent record label Role Model Corporate (RMC) which helps all creative artists to release their records, manage tours etc.  They released their first EP '...Are Running Our Children's Lives' in July 2006, followed by a single  'To Swing Back& Forth / Mort Pour Rien' released 3 months later. Their songs are featured in several compilation albums released by Leeds based record label Brew, a producer Brainwash and London based label Silverdoor Records during 2007 to 2010.  In March 2010, they released their first album 'Call Me Dragon' and their first EP was re-released in Japan with some bonus tracks in September 2010. Now they are making their second album titled 'Heroic Dose', and the single 'Live Some' is due to be released on 4th September 2012. 

彼らの情報全てはウェブサイトに掲載されているんですが、ちょっと読むのめんどくさっ、っていう人の為に、えぇっと、もしアーティストとかDIYかとクリエイティブな事が好きな人ならバイオを読みたいところだと思うんですが、フィーリングを大事にして音楽を聴いている人にはちょっと難しいかなぁ．．．結局これは自分の意見ですが、とにかくちょっと彼らについて要約させてもらいます。

These Monstersはトム・ダビッドソン（Dr.）、イアン・サーキル（Ba.）、サミュエル・プライオー(Vo. & Gt.)によるバンド。彼らはレコードリリースやツアーマネジメントなど、クリエイティブなアーティストのサポートに力を入れる新しいインディペンデントレコードレーベルRole Model Corporate (RMC)のために積極的に活動展開している。2006年7

月、These MonstersはEP ...Are Running Our Children's Lives をリリース。その3ヶ月後にはシングルTo Swing Back&Forth/ Mort Pour Rienを発表した。2007年から2010年の間、彼らの曲はリーズのレコードレーベルBrew、プロデューサーBrainwashまたロンドンベースのSilverdoor Recordsからリリースされたコンピレーションアルバムに収録された。2010年3月にはファーストアルバムCall Me Dragonを発表、まだ同年9月にはAre Running Our Children's Livesがボーナストラックを含み日本で限定リリースされた。現在はHeroic Doseと題されたセカンドアルバムを作成中であり、シングルLive Someは今年の9月4日にリリース予定である。

They categorise their music as 'regressive rock', but I think they are quite creative and aggressive!! I haven't seen them live so looking forward to seeing them someday!! 

彼らは自分たちの音楽を「リグレッシブロック（後退的、プログレの反対）」と分類してるんですが、かなりクリエイティブでアグレッシブなサウンドだと個人的には思います。まだ彼らをライブで見た事がないので、次ロンドンでプレイする時は絶対行きます！ヘドバンする！笑

BGM of Your Life

Sorry, it's not about bands from Leeds, but I would like to share this story with you.....



I was reading the latest issue of i-D Magazine at a hairdresser yesterday. When I turned the first page　I found a very interesting question: If your life will be made into a film, BGM will be.....


People who got involved in the magazine issue answered this question. I don't remember which songs they cited, someone was Queen and someone was Rihanna?? Sorry I really don't remember. But just when my hairdresser started bleaching my fringe I started thinking about which songs I would use if I make a film of my life.


They picked a song but I couldn't decide only one song because I was thinking my entire life from my childhood to present, or when I die in the future. So at least 4 songs came up to my mind.....


When the film starts, I definitely use Jefferson Airplain's White Rabbit.  This song is not that merry as the beginning of the story, and it's so 60s, but it does represent my childhood and I can't explain the reason why but I just feel, this is it.

Next song will be Rodeo Masscare's Zombies of Life. I use this song for kind of transition of my life, from my past life in Japan to new life in England.  Again, I can't explain but I had this all excitement to live in the UK but also had a little anxiety for the unpredictable future and somehow I feel this song matches how I felt then.

Then I choose this Japanese band called Yurayura Teikoku, 'Rame no Pantaloon', which represent today's me. Not much to do with the lyrics but for me this song expresses that I just enjoy my funny life and don't care what people think about me. I often get lost but I never loose dynamism like their sound.

And finally I want to play Pink Floyd's Us and Them when credits appear on the screen. This is a bit weird but I've already planed what kind of funeral I have, so my film finishes with my funeral and my friends are just talking or laughing when they leave there. So the intro of this song (studio version) is perfect to play as BGM. And to tell the truth I just love this song though.....

Maybe there is no coherence between these 4 songs but they are the best songs to play in my film.  After all, this only tells what kind of music you like but this is very interesting at the same time because you can learn how you think of yourself and how you interpret your life in music.  

So well, which songs would you choose as BGM of your life in a film??

リーズのバンド紹介からちょっと脱線しちゃうんですが、ぜひとも共有したいお話があります．．．


昨日美容院に行ったとき、i-Dというファッション雑誌の最新号を手にしました。1ページ目をめくると、「もしあなたの人生を映画かするとしたら、BGMは．．．」という面白い質問を見つけました。


雑誌作成の携わったスタッフたちの答えがその下に載っていました。だれだかはクイーンって答えたり、リアーナって答えてたり．．．実際ほとんど覚えてないんですが。でも、美容師さんがわたしの前髪をブリーチしている間に、自分だったら何の曲を使うか考え始めました。


雑誌ではみんな一曲のみ上げていたけど、私は幼少期から現在、あるいは自分が死ぬときまでの全体の映画にすることを考えて、とりあえず４曲が頭に浮かんできました。



まず映画の始まりは絶対Jefferson AirplainのWhite Rabbitから。　話の始じまりとしては全然陽気な感じじゃないし、おもいっきり60年代って感じなんですが、とにかくこの曲が自分の幼少期を表す曲なんです。うまく説明できないんですが．．．

次に選ぶのはRodeo MassacreのZombies of Life。この曲は自分の生活する場所が日本からイギリスへと 移った場面に。これも上手く説明できないんですが、イギリスで生活する事が決まって、とにかく楽しみで仕方がない気持ちと、それと同時に未知の生活に対する不安もすこし抱えていて、この曲はそんな自分の気持ちにマッチしているように感じるんです。

そして現在の自分を表すには、ゆらゆら帝国のラメのパンタロン。この歌詞と現在の自分に関係性は特にないんですが、この曲を聞くといつも、ただ今の自分のこの変わった人生を楽しんで、他人が自分をどう思おうと、とにかく自分らしくいよう考えれるんです。しょっちゅう道に迷うことはあるけど、自分にはこの曲みたいに、初期衝動というか、ダイナミズムは失わない強い意志があるって感じています。

最後の最後、エンドロールが流れる時は、Pink FloydのUs and Themをぜひ流したい。これはちょっと変な話なんですが、私は自分のお葬式はどんな風にやるか、すでに計画済みなんです。ということで、私の映画は私のお葬式のシーンで終了。友人たちは葬式会場去り際におしゃべりしたり笑ったり．．．で、この曲（スタジオバージョン）のイントロは終わり際のBGMに最適だと思うんです。まぁ、ただ単にこの曲が大好きっていうのもあるんですが．．．

たぶんこの４曲に一貫性はほとんどないんですが、でもこれが自分の人生を映画にしたときに使いたい曲です。結局これは自分はどんな音楽が好きなのかを表すだけかもしれないんですが、でもそれと同時に、自分の人生をどう考えるか、自分の人生をどう音楽で表すのか考えることができて、すごく興味深いですよね。




ということで、あなたなら何の曲をBGMに選びますか？？
